Kssour Agafay
History & Culture
Kssour Agafay is a magnificent 16th-century riad in the heart of Marrakech's historic Medina. One of the oldest riads in the Medina, it is unique in having its courtyard on the first floor. Once home to a Moroccan noble family, the "Chorfa el Meslohian," Kssour Agafay was built five hundred years ago as both a residence and a venue for entertaining distinguished visitors.
The riad fell into disrepair during the 20th century and was acquired by the present owners in 1997, who faithfully restored it over a three-year period. Kssour Agafay still retains many of its original 16th-century features, including painted wooden ceilings, hand-carved plaster wall decorations and arches, intricately tiled walls, and impressive 4-meter-high doors.
UNESCO has listed the entire Marrakech medina as a World Heritage Site, and Kssour Agafay is just a few minutes' walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa, the world-famous square filled with storytellers, acrobats, performers, and street vendors. Other historic monuments, including the Koutoubia Mosque, the Medersa Ben Youssef Quranic school, and the Bahia Palace, are all within walking distance of Kssour Agafay.
